What the CarPlay screen shows, how recording starts and stops there, and where the business or personal question goes.

If your car has Apple CarPlay, Milometry puts a simple dashboard on the car's screen. It is built to need as little of your attention as possible: two large cards to start and stop, the distance and time of the drive under way, and the day's numbers. Nothing on the car screen asks you a question. This page is for iPhone only; Android phones do not use CarPlay.
Set things up before you set off, and use the car screen only while parked or with a single glance. Anything that needs more than that can wait until you have parked.
1. Connect and find Milometry
Connect your iPhone to the car, by cable or wirelessly, the way you usually do for CarPlay. Milometry's icon appears among the car's apps. If you cannot see it, check on the iPhone under Settings → General → CarPlay, choose your car and make sure Milometry is not hidden.
Open Milometry on the car screen. There are two tabs along the edge: the drive tab and Today.
2. The drive tab while not recording
While nothing is recording, the drive tab is titled Not recording and shows one large orange card: Start trip.
If you have more than one car in Milometry, you see one card per car instead, each with the car's name. Tapping a car's card before you pull away starts the trip on that car, which is the simplest way to put a drive on the right car when your household shares an iPhone between cars. 3. It can start by itself when CarPlay connects
By default, Milometry starts recording when CarPlay connects, so often you do not need to touch the car screen at all. The setting is in Milometry on your iPhone: Settings → Tracking → Start when CarPlay connects.
It is not a guarantee for every plug-in. If the iPhone has not given Milometry the location access it needs, or iOS does not wake the app in time, the Start trip card is still there. Glance at the tab before you pull away: if it says Recording, you are set.
A trip that was started from CarPlay, or was already recording when CarPlay connected, skips the train check that looks at the shape of a journey. The phone was on the car's screen, so it was a car.
4. The drive tab while recording
Once a trip records, the tab is titled Recording. It shows a Stop trip card, then two lines: Distance and Duration. There is no speed readout, because the car already has a speedometer.
Unplugging the phone never ends a trip. A knocked cable halfway along would otherwise cut your drive in two. The trip ends the usual way, when the car has been still for a few minutes, or when you tap Stop trip once you have parked.
5. The Today tab
Today is a short list: Drives today with a count and distance, Last 7 days with the distance, and Claim this year with the running estimate. It is there for a glance while parked. The claim figure is an estimate, like everywhere else in the app.
6. Business or personal, on the phone
When the drive ends, Milometry does not ask anything on the car screen. It holds the question until CarPlay disconnects, then asks on your iPhone: a notification titled with the trip and its distance, reading "Business or personal?", with Business and Personal buttons. If you use Ask me afterwards, it may ask "Keep this trip?" instead.
If you leave the notification, the trip waits in the Classify tab until you sort it.
In versions before 1.1.0, the business or personal question appeared on the car screen when a trip ended. It moved to the phone because a trip can end in a queue, and the question could still be on the car's screen as you moved off.
If something is not right
- Milometry is not on the car screen. Update to the latest version, then check Settings → General → CarPlay on the iPhone.
- It did not start when I plugged in. Check Start when CarPlay connects is on, and that Milometry's location access is set to Always in the iPhone's Settings. Once parked, open Milometry on the phone so it can set itself up again.
- The question never came. Check that notifications for Milometry are allowed on the iPhone, and look in the Classify tab, where the trip will be waiting.
