Questions and answers

Short answers to what drivers ask about mileage rates, claims and the app, each with a link to the longer version.

General information, not advice. Written as general information and correct as far as we know on 27 September 2026. Tax rules change, and how they apply depends on your own circumstances. This is not tax, legal or financial advice: check with an accountant, a tax adviser or HMRC before you rely on it.

Choosing a mileage tracker

What should I look for in a mileage tracking app?

Whether it records drives without being asked, whether it uses the rates your own tax authority publishes, what it exports, where your location data is kept, and whether you pay once or every month. Milometry records automatically once it is set up, has the published rates of several countries built in, exports PDF and CSV, keeps the log on your phone and is a single payment.

Features

Is there a mileage tracker with no subscription?

Milometry is one. You pay once through the App Store or Google Play, and there is no subscription, no paid tier and no in-app purchase for this app. It is not free and there is no trial.

Pricing

Which mileage app works without an account?

Milometry does. There is nothing to sign up for: no email, no password and no account of ours. Your log is stored on your phone, and place names and maps come from Apple or Google.

Your log stays on your phone

Can a mileage tracker record drives automatically?

Milometry can, once it is set up. It needs location set to Always and, on Android, battery set to Unrestricted. Some phones stop background apps anyway, so it also looks for drives it did not record and offers them back to you.

Drives that log themselves

Is there a mileage tracker for both iPhone and Android?

Yes. Milometry runs on iPhone, iPad and Android. A purchase on the App Store and one on Google Play are separate.

Download

Can I send my mileage log to an accountant or an employer?

Yes. Milometry itemises each month and each tax year with claim values and expenses, ready to share as a PDF or a CSV.

Keeping a mileage log

Why does a mileage log matter?

A claim for business travel is only as good as the record behind it. A log that gives the date, the start and end, the reason and the distance of each journey can be checked line by line. A round figure worked out from memory cannot.

What a mileage log has to prove, wherever you file it

What is the best way to track business mileage?

Record each journey when it happens, not at the end of the year. A notebook or a spreadsheet will do it if you keep it up. An app that records the drive for you leaves less to remember, and Milometry is one of those: it records, you sort each drive into business or personal, and it keeps the log.

Drives that log themselves

What does an accountant need from a mileage log?

Usually the journeys themselves and not only the total: the date, the places, the distance, whether each one was business, the rate applied and the amount. Milometry exports that as a spreadsheet, and a claim document as a PDF with the business journeys, the rates and the totals. Ask your own accountant what they want.

Turn a year of driving into a claim

Which app handles mileage alongside my bookkeeping?

Milometry handles the mileage and leaves the books to your bookkeeping software. It is not accounting software and does not post into one. It exports each month or tax year as a PDF or a CSV, and the CSV opens in any spreadsheet.

What are the HMRC mileage rates for 2026/27?

The approved mileage allowance payment rates for cars and vans are 55p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in a tax year and 25p a mile after that. The 55p rate applies from 6 April 2026, replacing the 45p that had stood since 2011. Motorcycles are 24p and bicycles 20p, with no threshold.

Mileage calculator

Does the 10,000-mile threshold reset every year?

Yes. It resets on 6 April. It counts your business miles in every car or van you use for one job, not per car. A job with an unconnected employer has its own 10,000.

Mileage calculator

What is the 5p passenger rate?

Your employer can pay up to 5p a mile for each colleague you carry on a business journey, free of tax. Paying it is optional. If they do not pay it you cannot claim tax relief for it, and there is no passenger rate for the self-employed.

Mileage calculator

What if my employer pays less than 55p a mile?

You can claim tax relief on the difference through Mileage Allowance Relief. If you drive 4,000 business miles and are paid 25p a mile, the approved amount is £2,200 and you were paid £1,000, so you claim relief on £1,200. Worth about £240 to a basic-rate taxpayer. Claim it through Self Assessment, or a P87 if you do not file a return.

Do commuting miles count?

No. Travel between home and a permanent workplace is ordinary commuting and does not qualify. Travel to a temporary workplace, between sites, or to a client usually does.

What records do I need to keep?

For each business journey: the date, the start and end points, the reason for the trip, and the distance. Employees who file a tax return: keep records for at least 22 months after the end of the tax year. Self-employed: at least 5 years after the 31 January filing deadline. If you might backdate a claim, keep the records for every year you claim.

How the app behaves

Where does my location data go?

Your journeys are stored on your phone, not on any server of ours. To show maps and name the start and end of a trip, the phone asks Apple or Google, like any map app. If you turn on syncing, exports go only where you choose: your phone’s own files, your cloud drive, or your own network drive.

Does it work in the background?

Yes. Recording carries on with the screen off and while you use other apps. If you swipe the app away mid-drive, Milometry tells you usually within a quarter of an hour and keeps everything it recorded up to that point.

Can it miss a drive?

Sometimes. Automatic recording needs location set to Always and, on Android, battery set to Unrestricted, and some phones stop background apps anyway. A trip that starts and ends in the same place leaves no gap to spot. Milometry looks for gaps between the journeys it did record and checks your odometer readings against the log, and offers anything missing back to you. You can always add a trip by hand.

What happens when I take the train?

Your phone leaves the place you parked at speed either way, so the journey is recorded. Two things stop it becoming miles. Quiet mode, from the bell on the Track screen, a Siri phrase, the widget, or a calendar event that mentions a train, keeps Milometry from announcing anything. And every saved journey is checked for the shape of a train or a bus (no corners and a steady speed, or gentle stop-start at town pace) and offered up for the bin, or binned for you if quiet mode was on. Tell it when you normally drive under Travel hours and other days go quiet by themselves.

Do the rates update automatically?

The rates are built into the app and change when you install an update. After an update, the Mileage scheme screen in Settings offers any new figures, so check it. If a rate changes before you have updated, you can enter your own rate there.

Will it wreck my battery?

It should not. GPS runs only while a drive is recording. Between drives the phone watches a ring around where you parked, and on Android an optional watcher uses the motion sensor, which is designed to cost very little. If you would rather it did nothing in the background, turn departure detection off and press Start yourself.

Can I claim the drive to work?

Almost certainly not. Ordinary commuting (the regular journey between home and a permanent workplace) is the most common way a mileage claim goes wrong. Tag your home and your workplace in Milometry and it recognises those drives and keeps them out of the figure, while still keeping them in your records. Travelling to a temporary workplace, a client or a site is a different matter, and that usually counts.

Do I have to use it for work?

Not at all. Plenty of driving is just driving. Milometry records any journey, works out what it really cost from your own fuel economy, splits that between whoever was in the car, and shares a single drive as a PDF. A holiday can be grouped and totalled without a business mile anywhere near it.

Can I bring my history from another app?

Yes. Export a CSV from your old app or a spreadsheet, then match its columns to Milometry in the import wizard. Duplicates of trips you already have are skipped.

About the price

What does it cost?

£9.99, paid once. For scale, that is the approved amount for 19 business miles at 55p. There is no subscription, no account, no tiers and nothing to cancel. It was built because the mileage apps we tried wanted a monthly fee, an account or both, for something quite simple.

Is it really one payment?

Yes. You pay once through the App Store or Google Play, and there is no subscription or recurring charge for this app. There are no in-app purchases, no paid tiers and no adverts inside it. If we make a new, separate app one day, buying it would be your choice, and your copy of Milometry would not be switched off.

What about updates?

Updates to Milometry are included at no extra cost. While we sell it, we keep releasing updates that fix problems and keep it working on current versions of iOS and Android, and you install them from the store when you choose. Paying once is not a promise of development without end: the terms say exactly what it does mean.

Is there a free trial?

No. There is no free version and no trial. If you buy it and change your mind, refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own rules, and our terms explain how to ask. If the app is faulty, email us and we will put it right.

Does the price differ by country?

Yes. Apple and Google set the price in each country’s currency and show it before you buy. The price at checkout is the price you pay, including VAT or other sales tax where it applies.

Can I use it on more than one device?

Yes, on the devices your Apple or Google account allows: install it on each one with the account you bought it with. A purchase on the App Store and one on Google Play are separate. Your log is stored on the device that recorded it, and there is no account of ours to copy it between them, though you can export it.

Setting up and changing phone

Do I need an account?

No. There is nothing to sign up for: no email, no password and no account of ours. You buy and install it with the Apple or Google account already on your phone.

What happens when I change phone?

Your log is stored on your phone, so you move it yourself. In Settings → Export & sync, save a full backup, then use Restore from backup on the new phone. If automatic export goes to a cloud drive or your own network drive, a full backup goes with it each time. Install the app again with the account you bought it with. A purchase on the App Store does not carry over to Google Play, or the other way round.

How do refunds work?

Apple or Google took the payment, so ask them first. On the App Store, use Purchase History or reportaproblem.apple.com. On Google Play, ask from your order history within 48 hours of buying; after that, email us and we can refund you through Google Play. If the app is faulty, email us and we will put it right.
