The best mileage log is the one you never have to remember. Milometry watches for you leaving somewhere you parked, starts recording on its own, and stops once you have been still for a few minutes. Most days there is nothing to press and nothing to remember.
If you would rather be deliberate, everything else still works: a button on the Track screen, a home-screen widget, “Hey Siri, start a trip”, or a Shortcuts automation tied to your car stereo so the drive begins as the Bluetooth connects.
Whatever starts it, points are written down as they arrive. Close the app mid-journey and Milometry notices, tells you, and offers to carry on or keep what it already has.
Take the train and it still works, in the other direction. Quiet mode records without announcing anything, travel hours make whole days quiet in advance, and a recorded journey that has the shape of a train or a bus (no corners, a steady speed, or gentle stop-start at town pace) is spotted and offered up for the bin rather than filed as miles.
Automatic recording needs location set to Always and, on Android, battery set to Unrestricted. Some phones stop background apps anyway; the app warns you when that happens, and our Android guide shows the settings to check. Read the Android guide

On iPhone, pair it with your car stereo through a Shortcuts automation and journeys begin as you connect, hands free.
Siri, Shortcuts and long press
“Hey Siri, start a trip in Milometry.” On Android, long press the icon for the same. Start, stop, go quiet for four hours or log a fill-up. Voice works hands free; the long press and the fill-up are for before you set off or once you have parked.
Widgets and Live Activity
Start or end a drive, or go quiet for four hours, straight from the home screen widget on either phone. On iPhone the Live Activity shows distance climbing on the lock screen while you drive.
Quiet on the train
One tap, a Siri phrase or a calendar event that mentions a train, and Milometry records without a word: no alerts, and on Android only the notice the system itself requires. Set travel hours and whole days go quiet in advance.
Usually knows a train from a car
A journey with no corners and a steady speed, or gentle stop-start at town pace, is a train or a bus, not miles. Milometry usually spots it, asks, and learns from your answer. Binned trips can be restored from the bin.
Nothing recorded is lost
Every point is saved as it arrives. Close the app mid-drive and Milometry tells you, then offers to carry on or save what it has.
